What you buy to connect my VHS video transfer to the USB port on my computer and edit, if I burn a CD, or do I need to record home videos to a DVR? I never knew the difference.

You need an A / V capture device. You have to put the recorder in the other room to get a connection, or another recorder.
You can get a DVD burner, but they are a bit rough, so goes the final product. A computer program allows for greater editing and create DVD menu.
